Animal models of vitamin A (VA) deficiency have revealed pervasive, multisystem
involvement, that in many ways mirrored classic descriptions of human VA deficiency
described around the tum of this century. Clinical and, later, epidemiologic attention initially
focused on the dramatic ocular effects of VA deficiency (xerophthalmia) and its magnitude,
now estimated to affect five million and blind 250,000 children in Asia alone each year (135,
159).
